Catron chewed on her nail, waiting for Azer to show up to their math class. Her encounter from the day before with Brandon and seeing the murder of a life giver gave her second thoughts about trying to confront the siren. If she was honest with herself, the whole idea had seemed so romantic, heading into the deep woods with her handsome boyfriend, capturing the murderer, and dragging him back to the school as heroes. Dawkin would have her on the first ship to Mo to recommend her to the king and queen for the Red Shadow before her seventeenth birthday.

When she saw that thing kill Sheriden, those dreams died. The heroic feats she read in books were unrealistic. The author’s pen saved the characters. But who would save them from the siren if things went terribly wrong?

You still don’t trust me, do you?

She kept her eyes forward and listened as Felix began their lesson on quadratic equations. Why should she trust Brandon? He pilfered through her head like the best of thieves, without permission.

Because I’m going to show you the impossible. Things you never knew about yourself, but others with the sight, see.

Her skin flushed, and she gripped her desk to keep herself from turning around. What did he see in her? Was that why Dawkin came?

Dawkin. There’s that name again. The one connected with the Red Shadow. Maybe he has the sight. How much do you know about him?

Nothing. Only his glorified image touted throughout the land. The man was a legend. For him to come to her cottage, to identify her as special, and provide the possibility of a future in the Red Shadow was a high honor.

So, nothing. If you really think about it, how much do any of us know about Mo and their highly honored monarchy? We’re indoctrinated at a young age to both respect and fear them. If we step out of line, they could squash us like miserable insects.

“Brandon?” Felix set his chalk on the tray below the board, crossed his arms, and approached, stopping right beside Catron. “We’ve talked about using your powers in this class. It interrupts the learning of not only yourself, but the other student you’re harassing.”

“Whatever you say, Felix.”

The life giver appeared satisfied that Brandon would comply because he returned to his lecture at the board.

The magician remained quiet until the end of class.

Skip your afternoon class and meet me at the magician’s common room.

When Felix dismissed them, she faced Brandon. He appeared as if he’d rolled out of bed minutes before, his hair shooting in all directions. Even the snake on his neck slept.

“I can’t skip my afternoon class,” she said, gathering her materials. “Mavis will pick the artisans for the Founder’s Competition today. I have to perfect the red vase shape. Dawkin will expect it.”

“About that…” Brandon drew in his eyebrows.

“Hey, Catron.” Azer sidled up and wrapped a protective arm around her. He nuzzled his face into her hair. “You ready for lunch?”

“Yeah.” She shot another look at the magician, slightly curious about what he was going to say about the competition.
